This Is Unreal Engine 4

by Jake ValentineMay 17, 2012

Earlier this year behind closed doors, Epic Games showed of a demo of what’s possible with Unreal Engine 4. Today, those details and screen shots have been made public.

According to a post by Wired, who was in attendance for the demo, it was “breathtakingly photo-realistic.” The clips ran on NVIDIA’s Kepler GTX 680 graphics card, which is the start of the next generation of visuals, and focused on an armored knight guy torching everything in sight.

While, yes, the environments and polygon counts are simply astonishing and beautiful, I can’t help but think to myself “…that’s it?” Maybe we need to see it in motion, as the new engine reportedly requires so much power to run it, Epic is asking Sony and Microsoft for beefier consoles.

Damn, those mountains look beautiful…

This is the second updated engine we’ve seen this year. Earlier, we saw the updated CryENGINE 3.

Ok, first I’ll post the specs to my pc.

    HP a6700y (my model)
    amd 1.8ghz quad core phenom
    4gb ram
    500gb hd
    650w power supply
    galaxy geforce 9800gt 512mb ddr3

Here’s my issue. I play this game, Americas Army. It’s a first person shooter and there’s a new version out (3). I played 2 and with my onboard graphics I got around 30fps. This is why I decided to buy a gpu. I knew when 3 released my pc wouldn’t be able to hang with it. Well, bought and installed the psu and gpu. Only owned for 3 days. My framerate increased, but after about a day I noticed that it spikes a lot. It will go from 30-60fps (in either version) and I’ve read that people get 100fps on COD 4 with this graphics card. Both of these games run off the unreal engine, the newest running off of the unreal 3 engine. I know that COD4 is more graphically weighted if you will than both of these games. So I was wondering if this could be something wrong with the graphics card or possibly something else. I’ve used the newest drivers, and still no progress. I’ve closed up backround tasks to free up ram, still no increase. I’ve already had Galaxy send me the RMA form via email just in case it’s broken or malfunctioning. The reason this started is my buddy (clan member) bought a pny 9800gt and he told me the specs on mine look better but he is getting a better frame rate. I even added an extra case fan to my pc just to keep it that much cooler (although it never reaches above 59 degrees celcius without it). When I was playing earlier someone mentioned they had the same issue with theirs (9800gt)and said they bought a new processor and the fps went from 3-30 to never dropping below 90 on Americas Army 2. So I considered that the cpu could be bottlenecking my system. I know it’s not the fastest, but for AA3 the recommended is a dual or quad 2.4 . Well I called HP and tried to get the processors capable of going in my mobo. It’s an AM2+ socket, but they told me that the wattage of the cpu doesn’t matter, as long as it’s AM2+ socket type. Now on their web support site it says the board can handle this….I’ll post a link.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen…269&lang=en

So I’m not sure to go from what they say or the site, but here’s a processor that I’ve been looking at…..

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx…N82E16819103678

So I basically have a few questions to sum this up….
    1. Could there be anything that I missed that’s lowering my fps in game?
    2. Could the processor be what’s lowering the fps in game as I was told earlier today?
    3. Does the wattage really matter for the motherboard if the sockets match up when it comes to processors? (I question how it can hold a phenom up to 95w, but only an Athlon X2 up to 89w)
    4. If you were in this situation what would you do, because I don’t wanna be without a graphics card for a month or so if I don’t have to?

I pretty much think that’s it, I appreciate you all reading this, I’m just tired of the headaches with this, and instead of bashing my skull numerous times into the wall trying to figure this out, I’ve decided to swallow my pride and ask for help. HPs support sucks ass, and I don’t really know where else to turn. I’m almost to the point of selling my blood to buy a new mobo too so I won’t have to dial that damn HP number again. If you know of any good processors in the instance that I can’t use the one listed above, feel free to link them or name em and I’ll do the shopping on my own. Thanks again.

I foolishly got this laptop with Intel HD Graphics in it (Dell Inspiron 1564) and my dad has told me that I am stuck with it for a few years. With that in mind, is there any way that I can boost performance on the laptop? I’ve added 4GB RAM to replace a 1GB stick which has helped a lot. I can get another one but I want to know if there is any other way to boost performance somehow. I know that I can’t replace most things like a graphics card and the ATI XGP external card hasn’t shown up yet.

So, is there anything that I can do to increase performance? Keep in mind that I’m not a computer/laptop expert and I don’t really want to overclock the card because I think it’s basically killing your laptop. I’ve already searched far and wide for an external graphics card but for starters, not many are easy to get ahold of and I don’t even have an ExpressCard socket for my laptop anyway.

I’ve used Game Turbo Booster to help me run games and surprisingly, I can run games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead and Unreal Engine 3 Games. Another thing – would a cooling pad help at all? My laptop does rarely overheat but it gets quite hot when I run some highly demanding games. Any answers that could help will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

The main character resembles Marcus Fenix alot.
The story game play is like online game play.
It is one of the best FPS online games to date
The game takes pale in the future
It was made by Epic Games and uses Unreal engines
It is the 2nd sequel which means it has III in it
Even though it’s III it has many prequels before it

Things are getting harder in my CYNTG question series!

So me and my friends are making a video game using unreal engine and blender. We needed to make the game 4 player online capable and with all honesty were all new to this. We have some people using blender for models and me and another guy are doing the actually game with Unreal Engine. So is there like a place i can look at that will work as a how to manual for this kinda stuff? And as for my original question ya i just need to know how to get this game to be multiplayer weather there is an option built into Unreal Engine or if im going to have to code it myself.

Hi i was just wondering which game is better i played DOOM 3 and RoE but not F.E.A.R i’ve seen its gameplay and i dont want to play it cuz it looks like the ring.

DOOM 3 – is a very good game.
Doom 3 graphics engine is the unified lighting and shadowing. All 3D engines up to and including Quake III and Unreal Tournament had computed or rendered lightmaps during map creation, saving that information in the map data, which made the lighting extremely static. By contrast in the new Doom 3 engine, most light sources are computed on the fly. This allows lights to cast shadows even on non-static objects such as monsters or machinery, which was impossible with static lightmaps. A shortcoming of this approach is the engine’s inability to render soft shadows and global illumination.

As well as dynamic lighting and shadows, the Doom 3 engine was id Software’s first to make extensive use of bump mapping.

To create a more movie-like atmosphere, id interspersed the gameplay with many in-game animated sequences of monsters ambushing the player or just lurking around.

To increase the interactivity with the game-world, id designed hundreds of high-resolution animated screens for in-game computers. Rather than using a simple “use key”, the crosshair acts as a mouse cursor over the screens allowing the player to use a computer in the game world. This allowed an in-game computer terminal to perform more than one function, such as a readily apparent door-unlocking button, combined with a more obscure function allowing an astute player to unlock a nearby weapons locker.

Other important features of Doom 3 engine are normal mapping and specular highlighting of textures, realistic handling of object physics, dynamic, ambient soundtrack and multi-channel sound.

id Tech 4 (AKA the “Doom 3 engine”) began as an enhancement to id Tech 3 which was used in Quake III Arena. Originally it was planned to be a complete rewrite of the engine’s renderer, while still retaining other subsystems, such as file access, and memory management. After the new renderer was functional, however, the decision was made to switch from C to the C++ programming language, necessitating a complete restructuring and rewrite of the rest of the engine; today, while the Doom 3 engine contains code from id Tech 3, much of it has had to be rewritten.

Unlike the preceding and widely-used id Tech 3 (Quake III Engine) and id Tech 2 (Quake II Engine), the Doom 3 engine has had somewhat less success in licensing to third parties. This is especially apparent in comparison to its direct competitor, the Unreal III engine. While id Tech 4 had taken a new direction with its dynamic per-pixel lighting, this unconventional feature had steeper hardware requirements and was initially only useful in “spooky games”, whereas an increasing number of developers preferred conventional engines that could render large outdoor areas. Indeed, due to the long release time between id Tech 3 and 4 (1999-2004), id Software did not have anything competitive when Epic Games released Unreal Engine 2 in fall 2002; game developers used to UE 2 largely went onto Unreal Engine 3.

+When the 1st DOOM came out it was one of the most played games and when doom 3 everyone bought it

F.E.A.R – well i heard that its an imation of half life 2
F.E.A.R is scary cuz of the imation of the ring and that a little scares me.the game has good graphics too and its scary cuz it has ghost + when you are in the dark its much scarier but until doom the lights are flashing and most of the lights are turned off.

For my game design class I need to produce an illustrated report for one of 4 Game engines, unreal, id5, unity, or cryengine3. I have to find the the rules of one of these engines and then come up with a game idea based on that. The problem being I don’t really know what an engine is, no one will explane it properly, I can’t find any of these ‘rules’ or any relevant info that isn’t just marketing BS.
There also doesn’t seem to be any pattern concerning games for the same engine and every engine has been used to make every type of game so I am really struggling to find whatever it is I am looking for.
Unique selling points or rules for the engines would be really useful.

It would be great opportunity for game industries to make First person sword fighting game…. It would have an unreal engine 3(or 4), it would be similar to Mirrors Edge and Zeno clash except more sword fighting style, and it would be much much better than todays call of duty or bf3 or some other fps dont ya think? I know there is skyrim but this game would be ONLY First person sword fighting…. They could make a bleach game( i love that anime ), or they could make up some samurai story or some shit…. What you think?

    the ps3!!!!! and by far!!!!
i first gonna say why the xbox 360 and the wii lost:
    xbox 360:
1-the 360 just outsells the ps3 in america
2-and after halo 3 what can that xbox give us?? answer: NOTHING!!! there is no other super great exculive game!!!
3- and if u still don’t believe me i just have one thing to say: RED RING OF DEATH!!!

    now the wii:
1-the wii does not have the hardware and the graphics.
2-if u have a wii u will not play games other then mario mario zelda zelda mario zelda…
3-i know her controller is in some games fun but in other it just SUCKS!!!

and now why the ps3 is the winner:
1- it has the better graphics
2-it will have the better games:Little big planet killzone 2 metal gear solid 4 resistance rise of man haze unreal tournament3 3- it now has the better games: resistance fall of man motorstorm warhawk…
    4-it has an internet browser
5-it has the cell broadband engine
    6- a lot and a lot more…
after reading this can u give me ure opinion???
heyy tonton 619619, ure so stupid!!!
assassin creed will also come on the ps3 and u can remove the hard drive of the ps3 and put like a 500 gb hard drive on the ps3 so it passes by much the 120 gb hard drive of the ure piece of crap the 360

Im planning on buying a game built on one or the other. I want a good game that can play on my pc (preferably not newer than 2007). Graphics don’t really matter to me, as I’m going to play on lowest settings. I’ve heard great things about both map editors, but I would like to know which one is easier to learn how to use. Which one has better mods? Which one do you prefer?

One more thing: What game should I get with that engine? I would prefer a game that is still played a lot. These are some games that I’ve looked at and I am considering:

    Source Engine:
    Half Life 2
    Counter-Strike: Source
    The Orange Box

    Unreal Engine 2:
    Unreal Tournament 2004
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood
    Killing Floor
    SWAT 4
    Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45

My main question would be, how far off are each consoles from a technical perspective?

    My analysis:
ps3 has 7 cores, however, they all operate much slower than each of the 3 cores of the X360.

My experience from this: Computers that have 2 fast cores can outperform 4 to 6 core processors that clock at lower speeds.

Ps3 has half the video memory of an X360, but is well able to run games that seem very high end, such as the uncharted iterations, however, MS confessed that they deliberately did not supply the tools required to their first party developers to achieve the best of the X360

My experience: I understand what the X360 and ps3 can do when the specifications are compared to a pc, however, a pc with the SAME gpu and cpu would actually perform worse when optimized similarly to the X360 and ps3. Doing further research, i discovered that the developers take much longer to design a first party exclusive for the ps3 than a pc due to special rendering of the engines. Without the special rendering techniques executed, graphics, physics, particle effects, post processing and etc, will look significantly worse than rendered engine. I learned that the X360 is also capable of this. The halo iterations (bungie), unreal engine 3 also used special rendering techniques to pick up the settings but from research and learnt even games like gears of war, only require about 50% of the max power of the X360. I imagined if the X360 were to receive the same tools that sony generously supplied to its developers, the games will look and run as good as the X360.

FOR YOU FANBOYS: Through careful research, bluray does not have ONE SINGLE EFFECT on the quality of game. Did you notice crysis on the pc is distributed by a DVD and not a bluray? I KNOW A GAMING PC ANNIHILATES A X360 AND PS3, I HAVE A GAMING PC
I am currently a Math and Computer engineering major as a freshman. I am still taking many introductory classes, so please forgive me if any of the info i stated is incorrect, however, this is from careful research and experience

My budget is $1600 (Including tax, shipping, and an extended warranty), with whatever is leftover to be spent on accessories (If needed) and games. The reason I’m perusing a gaming laptop over a tower is because I’m heading off to college (Central Washington University) this fall and the size of a two-person dorm isn’t exactly tower friendly.

These are the games I’m interested in running:

Anything based on the Source engine (EX: Team Fortress 2, Garry’s Mod, Left 4 Dead 2)
    Call of Duty 4
    World @ War
    MW2
Call of Duty: Black Ops (The specs. haven’t been released yet, but I’m sure they won’t be much higher than MW2’s specs.)
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion & it’s expansions
    Fallout 3 and it’s DLC
Fallout: New Vegas (Uses FO3’s tech, so it shouldn’t be too different)
    Just Cause 1 & 2
    (Possibly) Bad Company 2
    Saints Row 2
    Unreal Tournament 3
    Civilization IV + it’s expansions
    Borderlands

    And I think that’s about it. 😀

I’m confident that the Core i5 and 4GB of RAM is plenty strong, but the mobile graphics card I’m not 100% sure of. Can someone tell me if I need to keep looking for deals, and if you could link me to some nice laptops, that would be great.

One last note: I HAVE to get a 3-year warranty that will cover accidental damage…because it gives me peace of mind. :)

    Here are the laptop specs:
    -Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology – Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.5GHz/800 FSB/ 6MB Cache)
    -4GB2 Dual-channel 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
-Dual 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT graphics with NVIDIA SLI Technology

Here are the games I want to play: (if you could tell me how high i can set the graphics for each)
    -Call of Duty 4
    -Counterstrike Source
    -Team Fortress 2
    -Unreal Tournament 3
    -Portal
-Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
    -Medieval Total War
-Possibly also if it would be able to run Starcraft 2 (I know it’s not released yet)

**I assume that TF2, CSS and Portal should be able to run on the same graphics seeing as they are all based of the HL2 Engine

I am asking this question because noone has been able 2 answer it for me. I want to know:

    1. if iphone games are actually worth my time playing and why/why not?

    2. just how powerful can the iphone be 4 playing games(graphically and gameplay wise) especally when used by the Unreal Engine.

    3. Would you say an iphone 4/ipad is ALMOST as powerful as a console(graphics wise) and if not, how much worse is an iphone compared 2 say a xbox 360 or a ps3? Would it be closer 2 a PS2 or just a bit better then a PS2?

    4. What games can ppl suggest 4 me.. i like FPS(Cod, battlefield), Racing Games and MMORPG’s. Iv seen and played the following iphone games: GT racing, Real Racing 2, Modern Combat 2, N.O.V.A 2, Order & Chaos Online, Gun Bro’s & afew others. I like hardcore type games but i want 2 get into iphone gaming also. Im a PC gamer at the moment.

i know these are probably hard questions 2 answer however i will give full points 4 best and most detailed answer. thank you.

It also has a new suspension and brakes, exhaust system (muffler and tailpipe), alternator and battery?

I have sunk about $4,000 into this heap over the last 3 years to keep it running and I know I won’t get a fraction of it back but now I’m getting tickets from the city because it is unregistered and viewable from the street.

I don’t wanna be a a-hole in my asking price but I also don’t want to get bent over either.

The interior looks great (plush with no/few tears holes) and the ride is unreal. The engine purrs nicely and it is a V8.

The exterior is good with a few rust spots.

The side striping on the doors has come off and doesn’t look great.

I do get offers in passing but nobody seems to want to throw out a first number.

The recent commonwealth games in Delhi are considered to be the worst ever! Do you think they should shift all the games played in India over to Sri Lanka and Pakistan and maybe even give Nepal a couple of games?
